School Construction Continues this Summer

Kids are gearing up for summer vacation, but construction carries on. Workers are putting the finishing touches on the new Memorial High School to get it ready to open its doors this fall. The new campus off Ninth Avenue boasts 332,887 square feet of buildings, associated ball fields, field house and stadium. Other projects due this fall include a new press box and concession stand for Memorial Football Stadium and a new district boardroom. Thanks to everyone involved for making sure these projects are completed on time and on budget.

While those projects are wrapping up, construction on the new Washington Elementary is getting underway. In just a few short years, Port Arthur Independent School District is well on its way to revitalizing its facilities for our students and our community.

In order to ensure proper community input, the Port Arthur I.S.D. Board of Trustees appointed a committee of community leaders to guide development of the district’s Facilities and Funding Plan. The group held its first meeting on June 14, 2007. Based on an independent facilities assessment by PBK Architects, a firm hired by the district to review current facility needs, members created three sub-committees to accomplish their goals:

Finance Dr. Albert Thigpen, Chair
Facilities Mr. Roosevelt Petry, Chair
Curriculum Dr. Mary Jean George, Chair

On August 9, 2007, the steering committee presented its report to the board, recommending a three-part improvement plan:

1. Additions to the new Memorial High School, including an auditorium, science labs, and a career and technology education building;

2. Renovations to existing campuses and conversion of the Stilwell Technical Center to the Stilwell Educational Support Center;

3. New elementary school on current Washington site to replace existing Washington and Franklin elementary schools, a new elementary school on 9th Avenue, Staff Sergeant Lucian Adams, and transportation upgrades.

These recommendations were presented to the voters as three separate propositions and were approved November 6, 2007.

At the projected completion date of the 2007 Bond Program, every PAISD student will attend a school with an improved learning environment that supports the district’s commitment to providing a comprehensive quality education for all.
